The Classic

What the hell is a classic?  Seriously? I know what it isn’t; a declaration.

I had an interesting view and slight participation in a discussion on Twitter.  Someone had declared Joe Budden has 51 classic songs and Ghostface has 0.  Ok, so you’re a Budden fan… that’s cool… you’re obviously not a Ghost fan… also cool… and people are entitled to their opinions but a line must be drawn somewhere.  I hope so at least.

For one, an artist can’t declare their own material classic to others, especially before others have even heard it.  That screams for failure so why would you highlight yourself like that?  That’s like saying I have the best hands in the world and being disappointing at everyone disagreeing with me when they find out my hands ain’t ish.  Yeah, you’re going to get a little more attention but it gives people a reason to scrutinize even more.

If you’re a fan of something, know when you’re just biased and you’re honestly being a good critic.  Don’t tell me Drop It Like It’s Hot is a classic just cause you know all the girls was gettin down to that way back when in the summer.  To me classic goes beyond a trend, beyond a lyric, beyond hype.  It’s a feeling.

I’m not feelin a lot of y’all opinions and that’s ok, you don’t have to like mine either, but at the end of the day… majority rules and a classic will speak for itself.  It doesn’t need a voice.
